Description: Ricardo Vilar is one of the makers that brought the Brazilian knife market to the forefront of American collectors' minds. Vilar was one of the primary organizers of the Brazilian cutlery seminar with North American Mastersmith Jerry Fisk, which was held in Ricardo's workshop back in 2001. In 2005, he became the first South American journeyman smith in the American Bladesmith Society. His work is exceptional, with dramatic shapes and detailed damascus. His designs and attention to detail clearly set him apart as a leader. Vilar moved to the US around 2018 and is continuing to be on the forefront of custom knifemakers.
The blade is forged from Ricardo's own damascus, combining carbon steels to ensure excellent edge holding. The feather damascus pattern is immediately captivating and draws attention from a distance. The spine and choil are rounded for comfort. Ricardo's touchmark is on the left side of the blade. Because the blade is forged from carbon steels, we recommend using camellia oil to oil the blade and natural wood handle.
The bolster is integral to the blade, with the damascus pattern moving seamlessly from bolster to blade. This technique has superior structural integrity and requires a particularly talented smith. The bolster is carved to encourage a comfortable pinch group, though its equally comfortable when holding the handle further back.
The handle is dyed and stabilized maple burl. The contoured handle fills out your hand and will remain comfortable even after hours of use.
Excellent work throughout!
