Description: This exceptional flipper was forged and crafted by Journeyman Smith Mike Tyre. Mike was born in Logansport, Indiana. He joined the US Army in 1968 and served three tours in Vietnam, coming home a disabled vet. He attended the University of Wisconsin as an art major and moved to Arizona in 1980. Having been a knife collector for many years, when he met D'Holder at the Arizona Knife Collectors Association Show, he found a teacher that could show him the way to put together a quality knife. In 2003, Tyre caught the folder bug. After spending a week with Texas legend Johnny Stout, Mike also sought instruction from Bill Ruple. Mike is a full time knifemaker. He has been featured in numerous issues of Knives Annual and Blade Magazine, as well as The Art of Custom Knifemaking by David Darom and The Art of the Knife by Joe Kerzman.
The clip point blade is W-2 carbon steel with a differential heat treatment separating the ultra-hard cutting edge from the soft and supportive spine. W2 carbon steel is highly revered for its ability to hold an excellent edge coupled with good toughness and chip resistance.
The blade is perfectly centered and has silky-smooth, drop-shut action thanks to the caged ball bearing pivot.
Handle scales are mammoth ivory bark set on blue anodized titanium liners. The ivory taken from the exterior of the tusk features coffee tones mixed with some hints of rare blue tones. These colors move into the ivory from the surrounding minerals while buried for thousands of years. The scales are fit perfectly to blackened zirconium bolsters. Blue anodized titanium liners surround a fileworked and polished backbar. Mike's mark is engraved on the inside of the backbar. The blackened zirconium pocket clip is mounted for right-side, tip-up carry.
Excellent work throughout!
