Description: This exceptional hunter was forged and crafted by Journeyman Smith Mike Tyre. Mike was born in Logansport, Indiana. He joined the US Army in 1968 and served three tours in Vietnam, coming home a disabled vet. He attended the University of Wisconsin as an art major and moved to Arizona in 1980. Having been a knife collector for many years, when he met D'Holder at the Arizona Knife Collectors Association Show, he found a teacher that could show him the way to put together a quality knife. In 2003, Tyre caught the folder bug. After spending a week with Texas legend Johnny Stout, Mike also sought instruction from Bill Ruple. Today, Mike is a full time knifemaker. He has been featured in numerous issues of Knives Annual and Blade Magazine, as well as The Art of Custom Knifemaking by David Darom and The Art of the Knife by Joe Kerzman.
The harpoon shape blade is hand forged W2 carbon steel with a differential heat treatment separating the ultra-hard cutting edge from the soft and supportive spine. The heat treatment technique was borrowed from Japanese swords. W2 carbon steel is highly revered for its ability to hold an excellent edge, coupled with good toughness and chip resistance. Mike's touchmark is on the ricasso of the left side of the blade.
The handle is a downturned section of sambar stag. The texture of the stag is excetional - very grippy without being abrasive. A mesquite wood pommel is carved to match the natural texture of the stag. A satin finished stainless steel guard prevents your hand from sliding over the blade during use.
To keep the knfie close at hand, a tooled pouch style leather custom sheath is included.
Excellent work throughout!
