Description: Rucus Coetzee began making knives in 2010 when he started working at Heavin Forge under ABS Mastersmiths Kevin Harvey and Heather Harvey. He began forging blades immediately and joined the Knifemakers' Guild of Southern African in September of 2011 (making him -- at the age of 20 -- the youngest member -- an honor previously held by Kevin Harvey). In 2013, he started his own workshop and began creating many different styles of knives and blades from hunting knives to kitchen knives, though Rucus' interest in bladesmithing comes from his love for history and historical weapons. He spends a lot of time researching these weapons, then creates one of his own. They are never 100% copies of originals. Instead, he tries to introduce his own style into the historically-inspired piece.
This Medieval Dagger shows Rucus's excellent skills as a bladesmith. His combination of materials and finishes provides a canvas that tells an age old story.
The blade was forged from Coetzee's own forge-welded damascus combining 5160, 1075, and 15n20 carbon steels to ensure excellent edge holding. The blade was antique finished to provide an aged look. Coetzee's maker mark is on the left side of the blade. The symmetrically ground blade features a deep fuller running through the center.
The golden dyed and stabilized maple burl handle is inlaid with twisted brass wire. The guard and spacers are forged from wrought iron from a 150 year old wagon wheel. The fittings nicely show off the inherent damascene-like texture. The textured brass pommel features green verdite stone inlay on each side.
To keep the dagger close at hand, a tooled brown leather custom sheath is included.
Excellent work throughout!
