Description: This is a very rare Spike made by renowned Northwest knifemaker Rod Chappel. Master Craftsman, Roderick “Caribou” Chappel, was a custom bladesmith based primarily out of Washington state. His blades are high-caliber works of art. He was an artist that brought his pen and paper drawings to life with ease and dexterity. A trail blazer, his passion for knifemaking greatly impacted the custom knifemaking industry. His artistry is immortalized through his unique one-of-a-kind knives, daggers, and bowies. Notorious for his ergonomic hand sculpted grips and the superior mastery in his sweeping grinds, he implemented a hollow grind with a rolled convex edge that would be resilient and sharp through many events of usage. Sadly, Chappel passed away in 2017. This Spike has been in a single collection and is in new condition. By all appearances, Rod could have made it yesterday.
The 10 inch blade is hand ground from 440C stainless steel and culminates into a razor sharp needle- like tip. One side of the blade is engraved with "Roderick Caribou Chappel ….. Spike". The second side is marked with the date this spike was made: "October 3rd, 2002 // Anacortes, WA". The third side is marked "S.S. 440C". The ricasso is marked "No. 1".
The handle is walnut wood matched with an ancient walrus ivory spacer. The ivory shows the interior tapioca patterning that walrus ivory is famous for. Red fiber and brass spacers help the natural materials adjust to humidity and temperature changes. A brass bolster finishes the handle.
Excellent work throughout!
