Description: Stuart Smith began making knives in 2000 after he took a class with Mastersmith Kevin Harvey. He was immediately hooked and quit his job working as a salesman by 2004. Only a few years after that, in 2009, Stuart began teaching knifemaking classes of his own. Among his many students is Neels van den Berg. Stuart has been very active over the years in the Southern African Bladesmiths Association (SABA) and the Knifemakers Guild of Southern Africa (KGSA). Stuart became an ABS journeyman smith in June of 2019.
This impressive bowie features a 12-1/2 inch hand forged blade. Stuart began with 52100 carbon steel, which many knifemakers and knife enthusiasts feel is the highest performing steel used to make modern knives. 52100 combines a very resilient edge with excellent edge holding. It features a meticulous, heirloom quality hand rubbed satin finish. Stuart's touchmark is on the right side of the blade.
The handle is stabilized golden amboyna burl. Amboyna is highly prized by woodworkers and knifemakers alike for its dense, swirling burl patterns. The sculpted handle feels exceptional in hand. The guard, sub-hilt, and end cap are antiqued bronze, which nicely matches the contoured amboyna handle. This is a knife you won't want to put down!
To keep the knife close at hand, a tooled leather custom sheath is included.
Excellent work throughout!
