Description: Mark Buzzell started making knives back in 2005 and was immediately hooked. In 2007 he took a trip to Australia to learn more about custom knifemaking and filework from Australian maker Darren Parker. Darren was instrumental in Mark's pursuit for knifemaking knowledge. This knife was kept in a private collection since it was made. It is in brand new condition and by all appearances, Mark could have made it yesterday!
The mosaic damascus blade was forged by Robert Calcinore from 1095, 1080, O1, mild steel, and nickel. The resulting multi-bar pattern is high contrast and extremely engaging. The billet was hand ground and heat treated by Mark. The spine is nicely fileworked by hand to provide a comfortable thumb purchase. Mark's maker mark is on the left side of the blade.
The handle combines woolly mammoth molar with 2,000 year old bog oak. This wood has been buried in a Nordic peat bog. Low oxygen conditions of the bog protect the wood from normal decay, while the underlying peat provides acidic conditions where iron salts and other minerals react with tannins in the wood, gradually giving it a distinct dark brown to almost black color. The combination of ancient materials is exceptionally dramatic. The handle is finished with alternating brass and copper spacers and a brass guard and end cap.
To keep the knife close at hand, a tooled pouch style leather custom sheath is included.
Excellent work throughout!
