Description: Herman Schneider was one of the pioneering custom knifemakers of the 1970s and beyond. Unfortunately, at 86 years old, he passed away in 2018. Perhaps best known for the spiked dagger in the 1986 Sylvester Stallone movie "Cobra", Schneider made some of the cleanest knives anywhere. Among them were hunters and skinners in his early days to art knives and reproductions of 19th-century dress bowies in the style of Michael Price as Schneider’s style evolved. The workmanship of Schneider knives was second to none. As long-time knife collector and the headman of the Art Knife Invitational (AKI), Phil Lobred, once noted, “Herman Schneider’s knives lifted the industry up two notches in the fit-and-finish department.” Schneider was among the very first group of elite knifemakers to be invited to the prestigious AKI show. This knife was kept in a private collection since it was made. It is in near-mint condition and by all appearances, Herman could have made it yesterday!
The blade is ATS-34 stainless steel with a hand rubbed satin finish. ATS-34 is high in carbon and chromium giving excellent chip resistant, edge holding, and corrosion resistance. The double hollow grind is perfectly ground. Herman's touchmark and No. 403 is engraved on the left side of the blade.
Handle scales are antique Micarta set on a full tang. The blade and tang are distal tapered providing perfect balance in hand. The antique Micarta scales were scrimshawed with an American Eagle on both sides of the knife. The rivets are hand engraved to continue the scrimshawed image. The nickel silver bolsters are hand engraved. The engraving is marked S.M.L. A lanyard can be added to the rear of the handle for extra retention.
To keep the knife close at hand, a hand stitched leather sheath is included.
Excellent work throughout!
