Description: When I recently visited Mastersmiths Kevin and Heather Harvey, I was very pleased to see they had some of their knives available. Kevin and Heather teach bladesmithing courses, with students travelling from all over the world to learn their techniques. Kevin uses the Heavin Forge mark on his knives when he creates a knife while demonstrating for his classes. This is one such knife.
The 5 inch drop point blade was hand forged from 52100 carbon steel -- a steel that many knifemakers and collectors feel to have the highest performance found anywhere. The blade features a hand rubbed satin finish. It is flat ground with a convex cutting edge. A slight recurve increases cutting power. The Heavin Forge mark is on the left side of the blade.
The handle is wild olive wood (Olea europeae sub sp. Africana) set with a hand domed brass pin. Wild olive wood is a hard, dense timber and is tremendously resilient -- exactly what we would hope for in a knife handle. The buttery yellow wood has a nice mix of light and dark tones. The contoured handle provides a comfortable grp. The handle is finished with a polished brass guard. Fiber spacers assist the handle to adjust to temperature and humidity changes.
To keep the knife close at hand, a tooled leather custom sheath made by Kevin is included.
Excellent work throughout!
