Description: Don Fogg, who was one of the first Mastersmiths, became an ABS Mastersmith in 1981 (and again in 1997 after allowing his mastersmith credentials to lapse) and is one of the true teachers of the craft. He has helped countless beginning and advanced smiths on their journey and has defined a standard for quality. Don has retired from bladesmithing and his work is rarely found on the secondary market. To put it simply, works by Don Fogg are some of the most coveted custom knives in the industry! This Tanto was in a mastersmith's private collection. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition.
The blade was hand forged from 1095 carbon steel round bar. 1095 provides a nice balance of extreme edge holding and chip resistance. Borrowing from the world of Japanese swords, Fogg coated the spine with clay prior to heat treatment. The clay acts as a heat sink, keeping the spine softer and supportive while allowing the edge to be exceptionally hard. The undulating heat treatment line seen in the blade is called a hamon. The blade is distal tapered and feels exceptional in hand. It is convex ground for resilient, strong geometry. The spine (mune) is beveled to create an elegant ridge running along the center.
The handle is oak with a traditional Japanese epoxy-soaked nylon wrap. Fogg's mark, a gold pin on the left side of the handle is hand engraved. The slim handle feels nimble, yet excellent in the hand.
To keep the knife close at hand, a Kydex sheath wrapped in nylon cord is included.
A rare chance to own a true piece of knifemaking history from one of the greats!
Excellent work throughout!
