Description: Ch'ien Turner (born in 2001) is a young, extremely talented South African bladesmith. He made his first knife at age 14 with the help of De Wet Van Zyl. At the time, he lived just down the street from De Wet and was able ask him constant questions. A friendship blossomed, and by 15, Van Zyl took him on as a part time apprentice. At 20, Turner began working full time with Van Zyl. Ch'ien has an exceptional grasp of forging, chef's knives, and even art knives. When Ch'ien presented his work at the 2022 Durban Easter Knife Show, he won seven awards, including, Best New Maker, Best Novice Hunter, Best Novice Forged, Best Novice Fighter, Best Novice Bird and Trout, and Best Novice Set.
This 7 inch chef's knife is a perfect all-purpose blade ideal for a wide variety of cutting tasks—slicing, dicing, and chopping small to medium-sized fruits, vegetables, and other foods. With its curved belly, this chef's knife can also be effortlessly "rocked" through fresh herbs or spices to produce a very fine mince.
The blade was forged from Ch'ien's own san mai. A high performance O1 carbon steel core is surrounded by 3Cr12 stainless steel. This provides the performance of carbon steel with easier maintenance. Because the core is carbon steel, it should still be dried off and oiled after use. A shinogi grind creates exceptional food release.
The handle is inspired by traditional Japanese handles. The ambidextrous octagonal handle provides a sure grip that will remain comfortable after hours of use. The front of the handle is sealed with low layer count mokume combining copper and nickel.
Exceptional work throughout! This knife is sure to become a kitchen favorite.
