Description: Stuart Smith began making knives in 2000 after he took a class with Mastersmith Kevin Harvey. Stuart was immediately hooked and quit his job working as a salesman by 2004. Only a few years after that, in 2009, Stuart began teaching classes of his own. Among his many students is Neels van den Berg. Stuart has been very active over the years in the Southern African Bladesmiths Association (SABA) and the Knifemakers Guild of Southern Africa (KGSA). Stuart became a Journeyman Smith in June 2019.
The dramatic blade is hand forged damascus, combining 1080 and 15n20 carbon steels to ensure excellent edge holding and chip resistance. A deep etch provides a bold pattern that will have you staring at it for hours. A fuller lightens the blade without sacrificing strength and durability. Stuart's J.S. mark is on the left side of the blade and his touchmark is featured on the right.
The handle is stabilized thuya burl, contoured to provide a comfortable grip. Alternating bronze and fiber spacers will help the natural wood adjust to humidity and temperature changes while out in the field. The handle is finished with a polished bronze guard.
To keep the knife close at hand, a tooled black leather custom sheath is included. The sheath design allows you to remove the sheath from the belt without taking your belt off.
Excellent work throughout!
