Description: Visiting with Journeyman Smith Stuart Smith is always a highlight of my visits to South Africa. His dramatic personality shines through his hand forged knives. Smith began making knives in 2000 after he took a class with Mastersmith Kevin Harvey. Stuart was immediately hooked and quite his job working as a salesman by 2004. Only a few years after that, in 2009, Stuart began teaching classes of his own. Among his many students is Neels van den Berg. Stuart has been very active over the years in the Southern African Bladesmiths Association (SABA) and the Knifemakers Guild of Southern Africa (KGSA).
Stuart forged the clip point blade from 52100 carbon steel, ensuring a keen, long lasting edge. 52100 is considered by many knifemakers and knife users to be among the best steels used today. The blade features an antiqued hand rubbed satin finish.
The handle is presentation grade skunkbush burl (Rhus trilotata). Skunkbush is in the sumac family. This light toned burl wood has tremendous figure. The ferrule and oval guard are both antiqued bronze. A central hand domed pin completes the handle.
The knife is accompanied by a hand tooled leather sheath.
Exceptional work throughout!
