Description: Luis Pina, is an exceptional bladesmith. He specializes in hand forged knives with dramatic, integral bolsters. He apprenticed under Mastersmith David Lisch. Though David's eye for design clearly shines through Luis' work, Pina has developed his own unique, tremendous style.
Pina began by forging the mosaic damascus for the blade. He began with layers of 1080 and 15N20 carbon steels. The bold patterned damascus is immediately captivating and draws attention for closer examination. Because this knife is forged from carbon steels, we recommend camellia oil to avoid rust and oxidation. By forging closely to shape, he ensures optimal grain structure for a keen, long lasting edge. The blade has an elegant distal taper for perfect balance.
The bolster is fully integral to the blade, with the damascus pattern moving seamlessly from bolster to blade. This technique has superior structural integrity and requires a particularly talented smith.
The handle is formed from presentation grade maple burl wood that is brought to a polished luster. It is hand contoured for a secure, comfortable grip. Alternating black and red G-10 spacers assist the handle adjust to humidity and temperature changes.
Excellent work throughout!
