Description: Visiting with Journeyman Smith Stuart Smith is always a highlight of my visits to South Africa. His dramatic personality shines through his hand forged knives. Smith began making knives in 2000 after he took a class with Mastersmith Kevin Harvey. Stuart was immediately hooked and quite his job working as a salesman by 2004. Only a few years after that, in 2009, Stuart began teaching classes of his own. Among his many students is Neels van den Berg. Stuart has been very active over the years in the Southern African Bladesmiths Association (SABA) and the Knifemakers Guild of Southern Africa (KGSA).
Stuart forged the clip point blade from 52100 carbon steel, ensuring a keen, long lasting edge. 52100 is considered by many knifemakers and knife users to be among the best steels used today. The blade features an antiqued hand rubbed satin finish.
The handle is presenation grade stabilized walnut wood. It shows a slightly curly figure with a nice mix of mid- and dark tones. The ferrule and guard are both wrought iron -- revelaing the damascene pattern hidden in the antique iron. A central hand domed pin completes the handle.
The knife is accompanied by a hand tooled leather sheath.
Exceptional work throughout!
