Ricardo Vilar is one of the makers that has brought the Brazilian knife market to the forefront of American collectors' minds. Vilar was one of the primary organizers of the Brazilian cutlery seminar with North American Mastersmith Jerry Fisk, which was held in Ricardo's workshop in 2001. In 2005, he became the first South American journeyman smith in the American Bladesmith Society. His work is exceptional, with dramatic shapes and detailed damascus. His designs and attention to detail clearly set him apart as a leader. Recently, he moved to the US and he is continuing to be on the forefront of custom knifemakers.
This chef's knife features a blade hand forged from W2 carbon steel. This resilient carbon steel combines a keen, long lasting edge with tremendous strength and durability. A triple temper and differential heat treatment add to this resilience. The blade is distal tapered for a perfect balance. The spine and choil are nicely rounded for a comfortable pinch grip.
The handle is dyed and stabilized maple burl. Black G-10 encapsulates the tang, protecting it from rust and oxidation. The handle is perfectly contoured for a comfortable grip across hours of use. Alternating red and blue fiber spacers assist the handle to adjust to temperature and humidity changes. This knife is perfectly balanced -- you won't want to put it down.
