Description: Bill Moran is considered a legend among the knifemaking community and even considered the "father of modern damascus". He is credited for single-handedly reviving the lost art of forging damascus that has captivated knife enthusiasts and collectors worldwide! Bill founded the American Bladesmithing Society in 1976 and the American Bladesmith School in 1988 to continue teaching the craft of world class knifemaking. There are few knives that are more collectable than an original Bill Moran knife and we were excited to get one of his extremely rare bowie knives. This knife was kept in the Johnny Perry private collection. It has been meticulously cared for and has never been used. It is in great condition despite being over 50 years old! This knife is featured on pages 78/79 in the book Master of the Forge: William F. Moran, Jr. and his Classic Blades by B.R. Hughes and C Houston Price. A copy of the book accompanies this knife.
The hand forged carbon steel blade measures 10-1/4" long. The knife was made in the mid 1960's and is likely forged from 5160 carbon steel. The blade features Moran's Lime Kiln mark on the left side of the blade. Moran knives forged without a ricasso are exceptionally rare. The broad blade has substantial weight and would easily handle most chopping tasks.
The contoured handle is made from walnut wood. A large silver oval escutcheon is inlaid into the left side of the handle. The guard, fileworked spacer, and fluted cap are made from brass. The handle is carved to swell in the center for a solid, secure grip.
This is a rare knife from a knifemaking legend. It can easily be the centerpiece of any classic knife collection.
