Description: Jonny Walker Nilsson is one the true masters of the Sami styled knife. His work has been recognized for its innovations while working within this very traditional medium. Mattias Styrefors is one of the true masters of Damascus steel. Since 2006, Jonny and Mattias, long time friends, began working together and sharing their arts. This is a collaborative knife. From blade to handle and sheath, Jonny and Mattias built this knife together. The results are exceptional! This knife has been in a private collection since it was made. It has been meticulously cared for and by all apearances, it could have been made yesterday.
The multi-bar damascus blade was forged to shape by Mattias and Jonny. It combines bold and fine patterns so as to captivate attention from a distance and hold it upon closer examination. The heat blued steel is high contrast and very dramatic. Mosaic figures are surrounded by a firecracker pattern edge and spine.
The handle combines ancient wooly mammoth ivory with reindeer antler. The bolster is formed from crosscut mammoth ivory. The deep green tones are particularly desireable and rare. The right side of the handle is engraved in a traditional Sami motif (the pattern is not scrimshaw, it is hand engraving darkened with pine bark powder) by Jonny. The central section of mammoth ivory has a window frame cut into the handle, revealing a tile of mosaic damascus. The left side of the handle features detailed scrimshaw of an inuit fighting a bear with a spear. It is signed SAS. The scrimshaw is extremely detailed and can only be fully appreciated when looked at under magnification.
The exquisite knife is accompanied by a traditional Sami style half horn sheath. The lower section is formed from reindeer antler. It is engraved on both the front and back. Like the handle, it has a window frame cutout. When the knife is set into the sheath, it shows the blade in the window frame. The top of the sheath is made from hand tooled, wet formed, hardened rawhide. It is completed with a twisted leather lanyard with a reindeer antler bead.
Exceptional work throughout!
