Dakota Owen is an up-and coming young maker – literally, having made his first knife at the tender age of twelve years old. He initially started knifemaking to spend some quality time with his father, bladesmith Chris Owen, but his dedication to the craft is clear in the finely finished pieces he is creating after only a few years of working at the anvil!

Chris Owen’s tutelage of the young Dakota is clearly evident, with Dakota also favoring a Moran-influenced style with his knives. Dakota is a part-time maker, currently making about six knives per year and spending around a month on each knife. He currently divides his time between making knives, hunting, fishing and high school. His favorite thing about making knives is spending time in the shop he shares with his father, forging, working with his hands and creating beautiful tools.

Dakota draws his inspiration from many different knifemakers – too many to easily mention – but credits both his father, Chris Owen, and Don Hanson with creating work that he admires. His current passion is for hunting knives – unsurprisingly, given that he began by making knives that he wanted to use! However, he has made a couple of folders and will continue to work on improving his skills and perfecting new techniques. Dakota recently joined the ABS and is looking forward to the day he becomes a journeyman smith.

The materials Dakota most enjoys working with are 1084 and 15N20 for making patterned welded steel, along with stag, ivory and other natural materials for handles. Dakota does all of his own differential heat treating.
