Canadian knifemaker Don Ash comes from a family with a long history of hunting and fishing. His working career includes welding and machine-shop work. When he was trying to figure out a Christmas gift for his father that was both unique and deeply personal, it certainly isn’t a great surprise that his gift turned out to be a hand-crafted knife. Not even Don expected this gift to launch a new chapter in his career. Don became a full time maker in 1992. Now, with over 40 years experience making knives, he has found his niche.

Knives are Don's specialty. Each knife is unique, though size and shape determine which category each will fall into: hunter, skinner, utility, camping, kitchen. The process is definitely labor intensive, hands-on – and Ash works alone. “It wouldn't be the same product if I mechanized any of it,” he says. For a satin-finish blade he figures on 13 hours per knife and for a mirror finish add two hours to that. He likes to use locally obtainable materials such as moose antler and whale bone for his handles. One of the challenges Don acknowledges is trying to serve two markets. On one hand he wants his knives to be treasured by collectors who expect perfection in the design and flawless fit and finish. On the other hand, he also wants his knives to be cherished by knife users who want a durable, less glamorous knife that will hold up to years of use. Don’s knives often have the best of both worlds!
